Link to Love: Knitting and Yoga

The Guardian published a very interesting article on May 16th about how nicely knitting and yoga compliment each other.  Click here to read the article.

This quote sums up its general message:
"To really get the gist of why yoga and knitting aren't such strange bedfellows, you need to understand a bit about what's going on behind the scenes. In the same way as yoga uses physical movements to affect a change in your state of mind, so too does knitting."
I found this idea fascinating because it perfectly describes my own lifestyle.  I touched on the idea of knitting and ice skating positively affecting my state of mind in similar ways in a blog post a while back, and yoga fits into the same category as well.

I started yoga as a way to improve my strength and flexibility for skating, but I definitely continued yoga for different reasons.  I love how relaxed and rejuvenated I feel when I walk out of the studio after class.

What do you think of the Guardian article?  Do you do both knitting and yoga as well?

Happy reading!

  1. I don't knit, but I did recently try my husband's P90X yoga DVD and woke up the next morning feeling as though I had been run over by a truck! I've tried a couple of other yoga DVD's, but I am so inflexible that I honestly found it stressful and frustrating. Maybe I'll just stick with running... :P

    1. Want to know something funny? The way you feel about yoga is the way I feel about running!

  2. I love this combination. Knitting is definitely my calm place. I have a Yoga for Dummies DVD that I used to do in my basement. I'm sure I could benefit from an actual yoga class, but just doing the DVD made me feel incredible. I haven't done it in AGES. I kind of want to dig it out now...

  3. This is is so funny, because today all I've done is gone to a yoga class and knit! :) I love the way yoga makes me feel both mentally and physically, and knitting I love the idea of creating something out of basically nothing.

  4. I love yoga! I hoard yoga DVDs! I haven't learned the art of knitting yet, but I love to crochet! :)

  5. Laura! I love this! I crochet, but I think the same theory applies. Both crochet and Yoga have a way of taking you to that Zen like mind state, which is so serene. I also enjoy dancing, which reminds me that I need to look up a local dance class. I've been itching to get back into one.

P.S. I'm so super excited you are gonna learn to sew too! :)

  6. Oh, I love this!! :) I crochet a lot (I'm still learning how to knit), but it definitely has a repetitive calm to it that I really love...I've been aching to get into yoga because I know it will have the same effect, but so far I've only been to one or two classes here and there. I love your photos!

  10. I'm going to yoga in a little pit. I'm leaving two hours early so I don't run the risk of getting locked out. Wish you were meeting me there :-(

  12. I love knitting and I also love yoga. Haven't done yoga for AGES and need to find a good studio to practice in. They are both super relaxing hobbies :)

  13. And here people always give me funny looks when I compare knitting to meditation! The motion of both knitting and yoga set me into a certain calmed, centered mindset-- and while I love feeling fit underneath a ton of homemade wool garments, honestly, that mindset is why I really love these things. Great post!

  14. I both knit and do yoga--Hatha and Kerala. I find both to be very relaxing. I enjoy playing my Jane Fonda DVD and Lilias cassette. I most enjoy doing yoga late afternoon to wind my day down. Knitting fills my life throughout the day! I so much love all your knitting suggestions--especially the knitted roses and leaves. What's an I-cord?
