This is defin...Wow, happy birthday to your mother! This is definitely a chunky scarf if you knit it according to the pattern. Using thinner yarn and smaller needles is a great way to make it fit your mother better. If I were you, I'd use a bulky yarn and a worsted weight yarn and I'd use needles around size 10. Using a smaller needle size will make the stitches tighter so the whole scarf will be smaller. I hope this helps!
